Vaccinations

Below is an example of a common vaccine schedule that we often recommend for our adult patients. However, our doctors will work with you to customize a preventative care program that fits your individual horse at each appointment, particularly for foals, pregnant mares, or previously unvaccinated adults. Our office will send email reminders when your horse's next vaccine booster is due.

Additionally, you can access your horse's vaccination history online on the Pet Portal. If you have not yet received your login information for our Pet Portal/Client Site, call our office so we can set it up for you.

Core Equine Vaccines:

  1. Eastern Equine Encephalomyelitis/Western Equine Encephalomyelitis (EEE/WEE)

  2. West Nile Virus (WNV)

  3. Tetanus

  4. Influenza (Flu)

  5. EHV 1 & 4 (Rhino)

  6. Rabies

Additional vaccinations that your veterinarian may recommend include Strangles, EVA, Potomac Horse Fever, and Leptospirosis.

Adult Horse:

  • EWT/WNV is given once a year, usually in the early spring before mosquitoes are at their peak.

    • EWT=Eastern and Western Encephalomyelitis + Tetanus

  • Flu/Rhino is typically given every 6 months.

    • Horses that go to shows frequently may need a Flu/Rhino every 3-4 months.

  • Rabies is given once a year.

  • Tetanus is included in the annual EWT vaccine, but should be boostered again if the horse sustains a wound and has not had the Tetanus vaccine in the last 6 months.

In addition to the above recommendations…

  • 5, 7, and 9 months gestation: EHV-1 (ProdigyⓇ or Pneumabort KⓇ)

  • 4 weeks later: EWT, WNV, Flu/Rhino

  • 6 months of age: Rabies

  • 6-7 months of age: EWT, WNV, Flu/Rhino, Rabies
